We had some chilly, rainy weather in Dallas this week, so my usual style posts were put on hold. I did, however, get to try something recently that I’ve been curious about-Aerial Silks and Lyra Hoop! It’s basically like circus training mixed with a challenging workout, which definitely beats a boring trip to the gym.
I wasn’t a dancer growing up, so I am not graceful and fluid with my movements. But I do have good balance (thanks to yoga and good genes), so I was able to stay upright and hang upside down without cracking my skull open. The silks are much heavier than they look, so when you climb up the fabric, you feel supported and safe. The Lyra Hoop isn’t soft, so expect to have a few bruises if you decide to take up training. (Luckily, I wore longer workout capris from Six:02 and protected my legs a bit.) Also, be prepared to spin around and get a little dizzy. I have to say, the Lyra Hoop was my favorite, since it’s very Cirque de Soleil and I found it easier to use. Both require some killer upper body strength and core stamina, which can get you beach body ready in no time!
I probably won’t be running out to join the circus, but I will say that I have a renewed respect for acrobats, dancers, and those who blend both. There is an art to the magic we see when they fly through the air, even though they make it look like the simplest thing in the world. If you’re looking for a workout that is truly unique, you should give Aerial Arts a try!
