Are you a One Direction fan? I have to admit, I wasn’t even 100% sure if I liked the music before their new documentary, One Direction: This is Us. I attended a press screening a few weeks ago with scores of screaming teen and tween girls. There was a moment of panic that set in when I realized they weren’t handing out ear plugs, but luckily, Director Morgan Spurlock gave a speech that quieted the theater down.
Morgan, known for docs like “Supersize Me” and “Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden“, is in new territory with One Direction. He lobbied to get this film, and I have to say….he nails it. If you aren’t a One Direction fan before seeing the film, then you’ll most likely leave one. Even if you aren’t a fan of their pop/rock music, you’ll become a fan of them.
Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Liam Paybe are some of the most likeable superstars to grace famous stages like Madison Square Garden. They are funny, they are humble, and they are aware of one thing: their band is finite. There will be an end.
With short snippets of their hit songs and glimpses into their family life, this film gives you a clear picture of what life is like when you become a sensation overnight. Though it’s filled with adoring fans, more money than you can handle, and the opportunity to use your gift to entertain millions of people, the boys are quick to point out that it has altered their lives in ways that the public generally doesn’t see. Cue single tear and a few sniffles.
Today’s style comes directly from One Direction. They boys are simple in their fashion choices: t-shirts, skinny jeans, boots, and the occasional button-up or tie. They wear black, white, and blue most often, and have an effortless edge to their style. They vary their hairstyles from time to time, but their style has remained consistent since day one: basic teenage boy.
I recommend checking out One Direction: This is Us when it hits US theaters on August 30th. Spoiler alert: you won’t see anything about their love lives. However, straight from Morgan Spurlock, I can confirm that two of the guys have serious girlfriends and one DID have one when filming started. Now he doesn’t. You still have a chance, ladies.
