One reviewer put it like this: “Baz Luhrmann’s opulent-to-a-fault adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, is working a theme of “more is more,” part of Fitzgerald’s critique of 1920s American society, and just as true today as it ever was.” Well put, old sport!
Regardless of whether you loved Luhrmann’s over-the-top rendition of The Great Gatsby, this visual stunner hits shelves on Blu-Ray and DVD today and is ready to pop right off the screen of your HDTV at home. I personally loved the movie, with the glittering costumes, fabulous music, and heart-wrenching hellos and goodbyes. The style of hair, makeup, and dress are all very modernized versions of the 1920’s, with Tiffany & Co. creating a covetable set of jewels based around the film. Okay, so my style today may be a little more 1940’s than 1920’s, but the sheer fabrics and soft touches are all still in play.
If long but action-packed love stories aren’t your thing, I still recommend buying or renting The Great Gatsby for the eye candy…the colors and stylized sets are jaw-dropping. You can’t help but fall in love with Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and the DVD package comes with loads of extras, including featurettes that look at the Jazz Age, the Jay-Z-led soundtrack and a look inside the elaborate costuming. So get on it, old sport!
(Oh, and be prepared to hear “old sport” about a thousand times in the film. Really.)
