I recently spent some time away from my phone, the internet, and the big city. It was while I was waiting in line at a small-town grocery store that I looked around and realized how much of a bubble I live in. I spend far too much time thinking about what to wear to an event that will only last for a few hours, but not nearly that long thinking about what to write in a dear friend’s birthday card. The things that matter can be drowned out by temporal distractions.
I realized that there probably wasn’t a single person in line at that grocery store that cares which handbag is the “it” bag of the summer. And though there isn’t anything wrong with loving designers, handbags, and getting excited about a new sundress, it isn’t what really matters. Instagramming every moment doesn’t make those moments any more special than the ones we simply store in our memory. And missing a few Facebook status updates doesn’t mean you’re out of the loop. It means you’re out living your life the way God intended it.
