“Back to school”….a phrase that didn’t mean much for a long time….but now I’m a MOM.
Back to school isn’t just about my son moving up a grade or starting a new school; it’s also about my responsibility to prepare him well and spend my time wisely while he’s in class. And some of the time has to be spent shopping to make sure he doesn’t look like he’s raised by wolves. (Also known as being drippy these days.)
Some of my favorite back to school memories involve getting new clothes for the school year, and now that I’m the parent, I get to help my son choose what he wants to wear. He wears adidas soccer shoes to his soccer practices and wanted some cool, sporty shirts to wear to class, too, so I hit up the website. I found his black and grey logo shirt that looks super cute and matches many of his shorts, pants, and soccer attire. (Side note: don’t forget to order socks. I always wait until he’s outgrown his socks to realize he needs new pairs. Avoidable fail.) His tennis shoes are a family tradition; my husband and I both have a pair like his in adult sizes. They are sturdy and well-made, which means they survive rough days on the playground and still look amazing! (If a pair of sneakers can survive the mud and wood chips of a Pre-K playground, they can survive anything.)
Although I’m not going to back to school to be in class, I’m definitely going back to school five days a week to pick up my son. I’m usually changed out of my work clothes by noon pickup, but I don’t want to be in the yoga pants/sweatshirt uniform every time I walk in the school. So while I was shopping for my son’s new clothes, I did a little browsing for myself. When I saw this camo dress, my eye lit up. THIS. I must. have. it. I did a blog post recently about the tennis dress making a comeback, and as you can see, I’m still obsessed with the sporty dress look. I also wanted to relive my back-to-school shopping days by adding some fresh white kicks in the mix, so I got some fun sneakers with a velcro strap on top. My Stan Smiths are happy I’m taking a break and giving a new pair some action!
Starting fresh in the fall just feels good. If you’re doing some back-to-school shopping, here are my recommendations for a few things to pick up for yourself or your kids:
- New sneakers…hightop, low top, or both.
- Graphic or logo sweatshirt for chilly days and nights.
- Jeans. Jeans. Jeans.
- Stainless steel tumbler for water.
- Digital watch or cool hat.
- Giftcard for your (or your child’s) teacher!
Here’s hoping the new year brings more knowledge, more friends, and more fun.
