Once in a while, you get to be a part of something very special. You get to meet great people with big hearts. You get to share valuable information about something that can save lives. And you get to wear a very sparkly dress.
Fashion Stars for A Cause is a wonderful annual event that the beautiful Yvonne Crum devised to raise awareness for the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. She helps choose twelves ladies, treats them to a year of fantastic events, wonderful goodies, and allows them to assist in raising money for the SCC. Beverly Drive Magazine, the must-read magazine of our city, joined in the fun and promoted the amazing things this year’s group accomplished. It touched my heart to be a part of it this year….and though the parties and gifts and sparkly dresses are a real treat, what I learned about the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas was invaluable. I will carry what I learned there with me the rest of my life.
It isn’t until you have a loved one fall victim or visit a center like SCC that you start to notice how many suicide stories permeate our media. And one thing that struck me deeply-it is 100% preventable.
How often do we check in on each other? How often do we ignore signs of depression? Drug use? Loneliness? Bullying? Stress? I believe there comes a point in life where each of us hurts so deeply that we feel as if we don’t want to live any longer. But we also learn that there is hope on the other side if we hang in there. At the recent Fashion Stars for a Cause Gala, the amazing guest speaker Terry Bentley Hill suggested writing a daily gratitude list, which I think is an excellent idea! I added that very thing to my daily quiet time for a 40 day period once, and it made me realize I have more blessings than complaints. Far, far more.
Each month, 1,500 people in crisis call them at 214.828.1000 or 866.672.5100 to speak to a trained, caring counselor. Anytime, day or night, someone always answers. If you or someone you know need to make this call, please share the information. It really could save a life.

** In support of the Survivors of Suicide and Teens Can Survive outreach programs, we are selling raffle tickets for a three (3) night Cabo San Lucas getaway. You may purchase a single ticket for $50 each or three (3) for $100. Please email me if you are interested! The odds are fantastic, and you don’t have to live in Dallas or be present to win. Or, if raffles aren’t your thing, you can donate your time and money to the SCC anytime. They would love to have you!

Hilary.. thank you for this nice article. it’s so important that people understand that they really can help those that are depressed and suicidal. it’s not a pretty subject but the more and more we talk about it the more we learn that we can make a difference..When YOU and the other 11 young women went to the center to learn more what they do and what you can do is a wonderful step in the right direction..
Combining Fashion with this cause gets the ATTENTION that is needed to further discuss the problem.
