It’s Labor Day…and that means not spending a lot of time thinking about what you’re going to wear. This day is meant for lounging around, doing as little as possible. Which is exactly what I plan to do once I finish typing this post.
Speaking of work, something I’ve been thinking about a lot is how much time and effort we put into fashion (or other pursuits,) just to get noticed by other people. That isn’t inherently wrong, but sometimes I look at where the world is going and wonder what happened to putting the spotlight on other people. Doesn’t it make you feel so much better to compliment someone else, instead of trying so hard to illicit compliments for yourself? I’m just as guilty of it as the next person, and posting photos of myself on a weekly blog doesn’t exactly scream “selfless”. Social media has made us all the stars of our own movie.
However, the longer I blog and see the amazing benefits to creating new content and promoting what I love, I also see the benefit of stepping away from the constant self-promotion and telling a total stranger at the airport how much I love her green jacket. Or the grocery clerk that I like his haircut. Or telling my own Mom how much I love her new shirt on her. Giving people Facebook “likes” and retweets and Instagram comments is a nice start, but it still feels so good when someone looks you in the eye and tells you something they like about you, right? Because I think we can all spare a few seconds of not thinking about ourselves this Labor Day….especially me.
For everyone who took the time to read this, you’re looking mighty good today.
