‘Tis the season for baby showers, and there’s nothing sweeter than seeing a mom-to-be get honored for this special time in her life! My beautiful co-worker, Neeha, is expecting her first little girl, and we had a the best time last weekend showering her with love and presents. She grew up in New York City and loves her home, so I went with an “NYC” theme. (Plus, at the time of the shower planning, we didn’t yet know the gender.)
I found an adorable children’s book called “New York: A Book of Colors“, and used that as the inspiration for the party. I took the book to Susie Cakes, a bakery here in Dallas, and asked if they could make a cake using some of the elements of the book. If you’ve never tasted anything from Susie Cakes (they have locations all over California and two here in Texas), then you are missing out on hands-down, THE BEST cake you’ll ever taste. I went into the bakery for a cake tasting when placing my order, and I felt like I’d died and gone to heaven. The flavors, the icing, the soft, delicious cakes…it was incredible. I went with a marble cake, swirling vanilla and chocolate together, with chocolate chips mixed in. To say I was happy with the final result is an understatement. The cake was perfect! They recreated scenes from the book and added special touches, like “Baby on the Way” coming out of the exhaust of a taxi cab, and “Arriving 2017” on a Times Square marquee! The incredible artistry that went into making this delicious cake blew my mind. It totally made the party. (Special thanks to Susie Cakes manager Kelly and her staff for creating the cake of my dreams. Every dessert I get will be from Susie Cakes from now on!)
I don’t have a good pic of all the food, but we had “2nd Ave. Deli” pinwheel sandwiches, “Serendipity Frozen Hot Chocolate“, “Little Italy Caprese Skewers”, and fresh fruit. I served an old family punch recipe, fruit infused water, and sparkling pink lemonade to drink. Besides the cake, my favorite thing was the party favors, which were handmade soaps with essential oils wrapped in tulle with lavender sprigs that read “From Neeha’s Shower to Yours”. I ordered them off Etsy, and they smelled lovely. We also played a few baby shower games, too, but I didn’t want to play the usual boring baby games. I came across a few silly and slightly inappropriate games for us to play, and it kept things light and fun. (If you’d like to know what they are, send me an email or leave a comment and I’ll share.)
All in all, it was a wonderful day with friends and we couldn’t be happier for our expectant friend. Plus, we’ve been eating cake for days!
