Since I think most people just glance at the photos and don’t really read what I write here, I’m going to share something embarrassing. I was hired to do a recording down the street from where I went to college yesterday, so when I arrived early and had time to kill, I parked over on campus. I hadn’t been there in a while and things looked both warmly familiar and slightly different; new buildings have sprung up all over campus. As I watched students rushing to get to their next class, I did what anyone would do. I joined them.
Taking my largest bag that could pass for a backpack, I criss-crossed campus with the other students and went into all the buildings where I used to have class. I took a peek inside the stadium-seated classes and listened to the professors give their lectures. I breezed into the library to smell the scent of old books. I snuck into the theater and stood on the darkened stage and looked out into the audience. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time.
It’s kind of like when you fall in love for the second time. It still has the intense rush of emotion like the first, but comes with a wisdom that reminds you to temper your expectations. And though I was nostalgic for being a student again and having all my hopes and dreams ahead of me, (who will I marry? where will I work? will my roommate and I stay best friends?) I am glad to know that all those things worked themselves out. I can’t go back, but I can dream new dreams.
