Ladies, this post is more about function and comfort than fashion, but mountain gear has certainly become more stylish over the years. If you’re planning on any outdoor adventures in Colorado during the spring, summer, and fall months especially, here are the must have items you need to pack to wear while you’re there:
- Trail Shoes. These are probably the most important thing to invest in. You’ll spend a lot of time hiking, walking, and possibly rock climbing, so you need a tough but lightweight shoe. I love these Salomon Women’s Speedcross 3 Trail Running Shoes. They can take a beating, but still look pretty! Good traction is super important, especially when you encounter those wet afternoon rain showers.
- A Rain Jacket. Summer showers in the afternoon are a common occurrence in Colorado, so you don’t want to be caught out in the rain without a little protection. It isn’t the end of the world to get wet, but it can turn chilly very quickly, so having a rain jacket can protect you from the elements and keep you warm. Some jackets are waterproof and some are simply “water resistant”, so read labels carefully. I ended up wearing mine non-stop on our hikes due to sporadic showers breaking out almost every day. I like this one on Amazon because it’s an awesome price and has great reviews!
- A Soft Hoodie. Nighttime is cool in Colorado, so if you get cold quickly and won’t always be perched near a fire, you need a hoodie. I love a soft, burnout hoodie because it’s easy to layer for both day and night hiking or hanging out. Get one that is lightweight so you can tie it around your waist when it’s hot outside and will dry quickly if it gets wet.
- Athletic Leggings. If you have a favorite pair yoga pants or running tights, bring them! You will wear them non-stop. They give you ease of movement when hiking or rock climbing, and will also dry quickly if they get wet. You can layer them as well if you get cold. I personally love the Brick Betty line, which has brightly colored, fun designs that are super feminine, but you can go hard on any trail in them. Plus, you’ll look cute for all those mountain peak photo opps! (I’m wearing the green Vixen python 3/4 legging, which is on sale now. Get it while it lasts!)
- Sunglasses. This goes without saying. Protect your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun! If you happen to go out in a Jeep or ATV on 4 x 4 roads, they will help protect your eyes from dust, bugs, and debris, too. My Ray-Bans are my go-to pair.
- A Hat. Sun burn on your scalp is NOT fun. Premature wrinkles? NOT fun. Bring a hat that feels comfortable and that you don’t mind getting dirty. It also keeps you from having to even think for one second about your hairstyle! This one from Patagonia is next on my wish list.
If you have anything you think should be added to this list, please let me know. Happy Hiking!
