If you find yourself in Texas, then you’ve probably heard of or been to the Fort Worth Stockyards. It’s a tried and true western mecca for tourists and cowboys alike. But even with the old school boot shops and diners fit for a wrangler, you’ll still see ladies in stilettos and the occasional Hummer parked out on the street.
One thing to note about Fort Worth: this is dress up territory. When I lived there, we would dress up for TCU football games like we were going to a Hollywood party. The women here are stylish, savvy, and just plain friendly….and they love any excuse to dress up. If you’d like to have an authentic pair of ostrich boots for your closet or a belt with a buckle as big as your Uncle Ed’s head, then this is the place. And, if you’re looking for a Brazilian cowhide rug to put in your modern chic bedroom or living room, the Stockyards has that, too.
Don’t let the cowboy hats fool you; this place has all the modern conveniences and nuances of Big D, but with the genuine western flair that made Texas world-famous. I recommend bringing your camera to capture photo ops next to a live steer, the size of the steak you’ll get at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, and the beauty of a city that has managed to come into this century without forgetting the last one.
