I have a favorite place to visit. Do you?
For some people, it’s the town they grew up in, or their grandparent’s house, or where they went to college. Mine is in Colorado.
I cried when I left there this week.
It sounds silly, but I dream all year of going back to my favorite place. The time there is always far too short.
The only solace on the drive back home is the interesting small town stops along the way that cheer me up. This year, we stopped in Memphis, Texas.
Memphis has a population of about 2,200 people, and the cutest town square you’ve ever seen. Many of the stores are uninhabited at the moment, but for someone with vision, this square could one day be a tourist destination for everyone passing through. (Or for those who want to adopt a small town lifestyle!) The old movie theater is for sale, and has remarkable charm when you peek inside the broken doors. The light bulbs that once lit up the theater and welcomed movie goers to a little slice of Hollywood are burned out, but if you squint very hard, you can see them gleam again in your imagination.
Though it feels like a ghost town on a Saturday at noon, I could see a few locals bustling about in the distance on the square. There are some quaint stores, a tea room, and fun places to grab a bite. No loud horns, long lines of traffic, or circling for parking in a crowded parking lot. Downtown Memphis is quiet, but I can tell that it is waiting with great expectations that one day, the store fronts will be full of beautiful clothes. Shiny toys. Movie posters affixed to the theater front. Restaurants rich with the smells of country cooking.
One day.
