It never really went anywhere, but the tennis dress is making a comeback in the real world. As a former tennis player, I have to admit that I never wore the actual tennis dress. I always wore a tank and one of those pleated or flat front tennis skirts. But now? The dress is where it’s at.
My love affair with the tennis dress began when I started seeing women out shopping and at the grocery store with a tennis dress on. It looked sophisticated and whispered “quiet luxury”. The dress looks appropriate and classy at every age.
I’m a sucker for color, but I went with a classic black adidas tennis dress when choosing a style. I wanted something classic that I could wear with virtually any tennis shoe. (I have visions of those country club parody movies: wearing a white cardigan sweater around my shoulders, coordinating diamond tennis bracelet, and dining al fresco after an invigorating tennis match with the ladies. No signs of that actually happening, but a girl can dream.)
I also found these QT Racer women’s athletic shoes with florals on them. Fun for summer, right?
Here is why you should consider adding a tennis dress to your activewear rotation, even if you don’t play tennis:
- It’s a departure from the regular tank and shorts or sportsbra/leggings combo in the summer.
- It still keeps you very cool in the heat.
- You look pulled together but feel like you are wearing your comfiest pajamas.
- A tennis dress makes sense with pretty jewelry if you want to load up the accessories.
- If you DO decided to play tennis, you look like a pro. (Even if you stink at it.)
- Nothing is easier than throwing on a tennis dress and putting your hair up in a ponytail. No matching set decisions have to be made, since it’s all one piece!
Now all I need is a decent tennis racket so I can regularly start hitting the court. I’m still using the one I had in high school. At least my dress and shoes are brand new!
